Hi all,
Hurricane Jimena reached Category 4 and could have done much more damage than it did. Apolima made a 3 day run up to Puerto Escondido from La Paz, Baja after it was projected to go through La Paz and Cabo San Lucas. As it happened Jimena didn't go through either place but landed north of Magdelena Bay and continued up the Baja peninsula wrecking havoc with the local communities. Puerto Escondido turned out to be a good hurricane hole as is landlocked except for a 65 foot entrance channel so waves were not a factor. Jimena lasted for 36 hours here as a Cat 2 hurricane. 5 boats came adrift but suffered only minimal damage. We would come to Puerto Escondido again for a serious storm. For further information see my blog at Healthy Boating.blogspot.com Does anyone else have any experiences and recommendations for hurricane preparation on the west coast of Mexico? Gary

I have learned to not get excited, but be prepared. I get excited when I am in the 24 hour cone. Hurricanes do 180 on a whim, so you just don't know. I too would've moved from an open anchorage, and shallow water as La Paz is.
I tell everyone your health will improve. Muscle will begin to accumulate. Fat will drip off the waist. A calmness will come over you as you leave behind the everyday pressures of life. We have been back to work now for 3 years. A few months ago while looking at cruising pics. My wife said to me. "Remember when our only problem was the weather?" Our choice being which side of the island to anchor on when weather came. I have sat at the dock for 2 hurricanes while they skimmed us, and had Charlie just miss us on the hook while in Miami. This thing called cruising just ain't for the faint of heart. BEST WISHES in continuing on, and living life as it should be. |
