"Ohio Company Fined $130k by OSHA
The U.S. Department of Labor's Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) has proposed $130,200 in fines against Novis Marine Ltd., a yacht design and fabrication company in Fairport Harbor, for alleged willful, serious and repeat violations of federal workplace safety standards." The Safety Duck Quacks: Ohio Company Fined $130k by OSHA for full story. Also THIS similar report: OSHA proposes fines against Fairport Harbor yacht designer By SCOTT SUTTELL 2:39 pm, February 13, 2009 The federal government has proposed $130,200 in fines against a Fairport Harbor yacht designer and manufacturer for alleged “willful, serious and repeat violations of federal workplace safety standards.” In a statement released this afternoon, the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) announced the proposed fine against Novis Marine Ltd., which now goes by the name Grand River Composites. Full story: Crain's Cleveland Business: OSHA proposes fines against Fairport Harbor yacht designer Interesting that Novis "now goes by the name of Grand River Composites". Wonder if that is true and if both the assets and liabilities of Novis moved together to the new company if it is true? If you buy a Tartan today...who do you write the check to? Who stands behind the warranty? Can any recent Tartan/C&C buyers or company spokespersons comfirm or deny this reported change? There is no information on the Tartan website about this. |

I saved the Photos from the 5300 build and i am NOT surprised BUT there had to and employee complaint for them to show up and inspect
I recall pointing this out on the banned thread and the buyer of the boat telling me they were tough enough to take a little discomfort I will tell you though no matter how good you are at following the rules IF they come in to your work place they will always find something |

I am not real familiar with what you are referring to re: 5300 build. Can you fill in the details and post a few of the pics? I have received a briefing in regards to the authority of OSHA, and they are every bit as tough as the IRS. When they show up at the front gate, one has about 15 seconds to open it! haha I think they play a needed role and due to the dynamics, they generally have a more than adequate case when they issue a citation and you better have your documentation in order. |

When the #1 5300 build was going on someone did a Picasa web album that really showed the inside of the plant , i am not sure about copyright and will look for the link tonight
When i looked through it i figured somewere between the spotless Beneteau CNC routers and a guy inside a boat with a chopsaw sitting on and upside down garbage can there had to some middle ground for dust and fume control

Here it is:
Picasa Web Albums - Jeff - Tartan 5300 H... Note that the build of the 5300 took place in their Conneaut Ohio building which is leased from Larry Ousky (statuatory agent for Novis) and is under FORECLOSURE at present by the city of Conneaut. Their main "plant" is in Fairport, Ohio and the information in the press release from OSHA does not say where the violations took place. It may be that these pictures are of a different plant that was cited. There is an FOIA act OSHA liason which will allow further details to be revealed but personally, I don't think it is worth the time or trouble. More interesting will be the response to the fine during the comment period by Tartan/Novis or GRC...whoever is acually in control. Here's the FOIA contact info if anyone is interested: Occupational Safety & Health Administration Attn: FOIA Coordinator 230 South Dearborn St, Rm. 3244 Chicago, IL 60604 (via FAX) -- (312) 886-5588 Last edited by camaraderie; 02-16-2009 at 05:28 PM. |
